Mt Sanitas is one of my favorite hikes in Boulder. I am not alone, this is a very popular hike. The trailhead is at the edge of town on Mapleton Ave, next to the hospital. I recommend going early in the morning to avoid crowds and heat in the summer. Climbing this mountain is like being on a stairmaster for over an hour. It is very steep and often requires large steps up to clear rocks and wooden retainers. But the views along the way make it well worth it. And if you were planning to go nowhere on a stairmaster at the gym, why not try the real thing?
The most common route (and best workout) for this hike is to start by climbing the mountain on the hogback and then climbing down the switchbacks from the top down to the Sanitas Valley Trail. This trail is a relaxing, wide trail through a prairie environment. It is especially beautiful in the spring when the grass is green and the wildflowers are in bloom.
